What is FIERCE PLAY? Theater? Dance? Art? Sound? Story? YES!

An energetic, full-bodied, multi-sensory journey, FIERCE PLAY is a dynamic practice for creatives interested in artistic agility and exploration. Created by ensemble theater director, Amy Sass, this holistic method is based in physical theater and interweaves writing, story building, visual art and soundscape. Each session will find us up and moving, utilizing the body as a storytelling device, a kinetic sculpture, a musical instrument, tapping into sound with our voices. Working in small groups, we will connect themed journaling with collaboratively generated choreography and composition. This joy-based practice cultivates a deep physical awareness, expands imaginative capacity, and conjures a spirit of PLAY. Whether you are a writer, a performer, a visual artist or musician… or perhaps you are simply creatively curious, FIERCE PLAY offers a unique approach to awaken the magic.

BIOGRAPHY

Writer, director, teacher, visual artist, performer, puppeteer, ritual maker, lover of legend and lore… Amy Sass is a swiss army knife of creative action. For more than 20 years, she has dedicated every inch of her life to the study and practice of ensemble, birthing original theater, visual art and immersive experiences in the San Francisco Bay Area. She served as Co-founder and Artistic Director of Ragged Wing Ensemble (2004 - 2021) and was involved in every company production, immersive event, and artistic program since its inception. A long term educator, Amy is the visionary behind FIERCE PLAY, a dynamic, interdisciplinary approach to creative practice. Using this methodology, she teaches workshops, leads retreats and provides coaching to artists and institutions. She is known for bringing her visual artist's eye to the stage, her sense of story to the canvas, and her love of myth and movement to wild and urban spaces. Currently living in the Rocky Mountains, she creates in conversation with the local community of spirits, deities, guardians, animals, plants, minerals, and humans, creating mythic images, mountain narratives, and transformative experiences.
